For valuable, lightweight goods, the statutory liability limit can be far below the invoice value. Customers nevertheless often assume that the carrier is responsible for everything.
Before accepting unusual cargo, establish its value, weight, order conditions and insurance exclusions. A broker’s verbal assurance is not enough.
If the customer demands higher liability, additional cover and its price must be checked before the transport is responsibly confirmed.
Model scenario: a 650 kg shipment of components is invoiced at €95,000. A weight-based liability calculation may be far below that value, so the gap must be discussed with the insurer before a higher-liability order is accepted.
